Constant Powell (1806-1866) | |||||||||||||||||
CONSTANT POWELL (25 Dec 1806 - 1 Jun 1866) Most of this report is based on story by Blache (Powell) Miller. Constant Powell was born Christmas Day, 1806, in Montgomery County, Tennessee. He was possibly the son of Hampton Powell who was the probable grandson of William Powell of Edgecombe County, North Carolina. But this is only based on circumstantial evidence. In about 1839, Constant emigrated to southern Illinois (St. Clair County) with his wife Mary Lyons whom he married about 1830. Constant and Mary and the children packed their things in a covered wagon. The oldest daughter, Sarah, called Sally, was nine. Sally told her grandchildren that she road a roan mare most of the way. Constant died 1 June 1866 and is buried in the Shiloh Cemetery in St. Clair County, Illinois. It is not known when his wife Mary died. (There is no mention of Constant's widow, Perlitha in the 'family history' as established in census and probate records.) Constant and Mary had six children (not necessarily in this order): 1) Sarah (1830-1908) married John Distler (1830-1888), a German immigrant; 2) Charity (1841-1931) married a William or James Harrison and moved to Washington; 3) William Henry (1844-1882) married Mary Ellen Dale (born in Hancock County, Illinois, 1844-1933); 4)Trifina married John McMillion (St. Clair County records show Trifina married three other times: Luther Worly, 1853, William Johnson, 1859, and William Davis, 1867); 5)Betty married a Davis and 6)Rebecca married a Davis. This information is not necessarily correct and based much on oral history. Sarah and John Distler's children: 1)Mary (1852-1882) married William Bogg (on child, Nellie May, 1873-1974 who married Harry Alexander, 1869-1953, three children, John William, Raymond, Herbert); 2)James Willard (1855-1941) married Carolyn Mertens (1859-1932); 3)Celia first married Henry Owens, second married Henderson Alberts; 4)Emma (1680-1905) married Henry Schildnecht; 5)Charles (1870-1941) married Mabel Parker (1891-1974); 6)Frank (1867-1946) first married Martha O'Hare, second married Anne Galloway; 7)John (1865-1888) never married; 8)Monora (1862-1932) married John Emmett Carroll. William Henry Powell born 11 May 1844 was a member of Company J, 117th Illinois Volunteer Infantry (the "McKendree" Regiment). His unit was involved in the Red River campagins in the south and William's health was affected by his service. Children of William and Mary Powell: 1)Elizabeth (1868-1941), never married, according to one source, a Red Cross nurse in France during WWI; 2) William Constant (1870-1945) married Gertrude Fix; 3)Ora (1877-1910) first married Frank Harris, married second John McTeer (1877-1912), a descendant of the Blount County, Tennessee McTeer family; and 4)George (1878-1954) never married. Further information about these Powell descendants was included in "History of St. Clair County, Illinois, Volune II", 1992.
